Firefly on DVD

Stardate 12-20-06

I recently finished watching Firefly, the complete series on DVD and I must say that I have mixed feelings about the widely acclaimed series. There were so many things about it that I just loved that were very original and clever, but at the same time, I can sort of see why Fox cancelled it. Here is a little back story.

The story takes place in a post apocalyptic era where the United State and China were the only two remaining super powers. The two societies and cultures combined to form one super power called, The Alliance. Because of this, everyone speaks both English and Mandarin Chinese. The Alliance's territory expands from the Core, which is the center of the galaxy, all the way to the Outer Rim. Because of the wide spread corruption of the Alliance, there has been a Civil War. The independents fought against the Alliance and lost; most survivors have scattered to the Outer Rim. The captain of the Firefly and his first mate both fought in the Civil War against the evil Alliance.

One of the interesting things about Firefly is that the Vulcans have not yet made First Contact with the Humans. There are no alien bad guys or good guys in the show. In fact, there is zero focus on the discovery of alien life. Instead, the idea of exploration is more like the idea of a western and the taming of the wild wild west. This is what makes Firefly so unique and original. It is a clever mix of the Science Fiction and Western genres. They dress like cowboys, they carry guns in holsters that still shoot bullets, they drive cattle from one planet to another, and every once in a while, the visit whores.

For those of you who don't know, the Fox Oligarchy cancelled Firefly after airing just 11 of the 14 episodes. They didn't even make it a full season. The People of the Abyss raised their fist to resist. Their outcry of love for the show was enough to bring the story to the big screen and finish the story. Like so many others, I have come to the conclusion that the network screwed this show. But I cannot put the full blame on the network. What we saw on TV just moved too slow.

After watching the series, movie and some special features on the DVD's, it is clear to see that from the start, the creators of the show and the network wanted two different things. The creators wanted a character driven epic, the network wanted action. The result is an uncomfortable blend of both parties trying to please each other. While watching, I kept thinking to myself, "this is so slow" or "nothing is happening here" I soon realized that the creators were thinking long term. They were setting up a story line that would carry the show for four or five seasons and all we got, were 14 episodes; three or four of which were totally awesome, the others however, seemed like slow filler episodes.

I would recommend Firefly and Serentity to all interested in both sci-fi and westerns. The music track for the show is excellent, and the special effects are amazing. One cool thing that I read about the special effects is that the CGI team who created them decided to make shots of seem as if they were being shot by hand, and not a stabilized camera. The result looks really cool. Another cool thing is that the special effects team for Firefly got hired for Battlestar Galactica after Firefly was cancelled. There is a brief homage to Firefly during the Cylon invasion of Caprica. Supposedly you can see a shot of Firefly flying away just before the Cylons attack.

I cannot however say that Firefly is one of the best sci-fi/fantasy TV shows of all time. It wasn't around long enough to make that statement. Its great...but not amazing.

Dark Lord of the Sith, you can take my love, you can take my land, you can even take me where I cannot stand. But I don't care, I'm still free because you can't take the sky from me.

I am emotionally upset about your 'mixed feelings' about Firefly and its cancellation.

Your insight is well noted and the back story was enlightening. Why do you state that Firefly was a "widely acclaimed series"? Outside of Geakery, nobody has even heard of it.

I had never thought about the lack of aliens and I would hope that if it could have kept going they would show the progression of the Federation of Planets. But overall I loved the blog. Big fan. of you and firefly.

Firefly won the following awards:
* Emmy Award: Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series, 2003
* Visual Effects Society: Best visual effects in a television series, 2003 (episode "Serenity")
* Saturn Award: Cinescape Genre Face of the Future Award, Male, 2003 (Nathan Fillion)
* Saturn Award: Saturn Award for Best DVD Release (television), 2004
* SyFy Genre Awards: Best Actor/Television Nathan Fillion, 2006[53]
* SyFy Genre Awards: Best Supporting Actor/Television Adam Baldwin, 2006
* SyFy Genre Awards: Best Special Guest/Television Christina Hendricks for "Trash", 2006
* SyFy Genre Awards: Best Episode/Television "Trash", 2006
* SyFy Genre Awards: Best Series/Television, 2006

The series was also nominated for the folowing awards:
* Visual Effects Society: Best compositing in a televised program, music video, or commercial, 2003
* Motion Picture Sound Editors, USA, "Golden Reel Award": Best sound editing in television long form: sound effects/foley, 2003
* Hugo Award: Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form, 2003 (episode "Serenity")
* Hugo Award: Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form, 2004 (episodes "Heart of Gold" and "The Message", which at that time had not been shown on television in the USA)
* Golden Satellite Award: Best DVD Extras, 2004

Looks like they really cleaned house at the Saturn Awards and the SyFy Genre Awards. How much more proof do you want that this was a widely acclaimed series?

And I understand you being emotionally upset. I am sort of upset at myself for having the views that I do. I really wanted to love the show and hail it as one of the best of all time. I'm sorry. I just can't do it.

My Lord, your insight into the soul of Firefly was both rewarding and deflating. Personally, I have only seen 'Serenity,' and I was excited to view the rest of the series. I still will, and I think that your caution will make my viewing more successful than it might have been. I look forward to the great episodes and I won't be too disappointed with the lesser ones.

Don't listen to the rumbler, he is simply jealous of your insightful abilities and hopes to dampen your flame. Don't be fooled by his last comments that he "loved the blog."

Anyway, I am likewise intrigued by the setting and style of Firefly. I would have liked to rename the show with a subheading. "Firefly, A Western Odyssey." May I shed a little bit of light upon the "western" aspect of Firefly.

We all know the slightly derogatory nature of calling a show a "soap opera." It implies a sort of superficiality. Well, in an ill-intentioned attempt to degrade Scientificion, early critics labelled the "outer space" stories "Space Operas." It was a fairly accurate label for many of the pulpy stories that were being produced (if you want to read a couple then try "Shambleau" (1933) or "The Conquest of Gola"(1931)) in the early part of the 20th Century. But, fortunately, the evil-doers plot did not come to fruit, but, instead, was turned upon itself and has become a kind of endearing term. Especially since certain Space Operas, such as
'Star Trek' and 'Star Wars,' have been so successful. (Note: Rumbler, if you have any qualms about those statistics then you are at liberty to contact Mr. George Lucas and politely request a statement of the gross profit from his latest Star Wars film).

So what is a Space Opera? I guess the simplest explaination is that a Space Opera is an adventure story that is set in space. However, as our Dark Lord has pointed out, the Sci-fi genre is definately a hodge podge, or compilation/melding, of several other genres. Space Operas tend to draw upon the storylines of American Westerns (see the film 'Wild, Wild, West,' the TV series 'Firefly,' or one of my favorite short stories 'A Princess of Mars'), African exploration stories (Think of 'The Wrath of Kahn'), sailing adventures (an interesting book that deals with sailing in space is 'Eternity's End' by Jeffrey A. Carver), and even tales of knights (Star Wars). Indeed, almost all of the classical storylines can be found in the realm of the Space Opera.

One of my favorite short stories, mentioned above, is 'A Princess of Mars,' by Edgar Rice Burroughs. In case you don't remember, Burroughs is the author of 'Tarzan,' and the two stories were produced during the same three year span (1911-1913). In 'A Princess of Mars' Burrough's presents a tale of an actual cowboy, who is speculating gold in the Arizona desert, who is mysteriously transported to Mars while he is sleeping in a cave. So, and I am not completely supported by other Sci-fi scholars, I consider this story to be a link between the western and the Space Opera. It not only contains both within the story, but it also set the pace for later stories of a similar nature. Think of 'Dune,' or even 'Star Wars,' where the story involves both a male and a female lead, both of them coming from different societies, but also mysteriously connected.

Anyway, I hope that you can enjoy the warmth that comes from a deeper knowledge of Space Operas. So the question is, do we owe the origins of 'Battlestar Gallactica' to Space Opera?

Miguel Pringle, in light of the fact that you are preparing to wed, I deeply appreciate your long and well thought out comments. I remember that you had mentioned to me that you were working on a paper about Space Operas and I was hoping that you would have some insightful comments on the subject that could enlighten us all.

I have been thinking a little more about why I didn't love the series as much as I loved the movie, and now I think the answer is quite obvious. I too saw Serenity before I saw Firefly, and because of this, I was fully expecting the same fast paced action and great story telling that I saw in the movie. I now realize that had Firefly kept going, we would have seen that. They were deffenetly setting the story up for something good. Its too bad it got the axe. It did however, pave the way for a completely aciton pact movie. After you see the series though, you will realize that there were even some story lines being built Firefly that still have not been answered.

I plan on researching the origins of Battlestar a bit more, but I do know that the original was created by un Mormon and its based on the gathering of the 12 tribes of Isreal.

Here is a queston for you. When would a science fiction epic not be considered a Space Opera?

Mike Blakesley said...

Mr. Darth,
Though I have to take a final some time today, I would much rather comment on your blog.

I dont know exactly when a Science Fiction epic would not be considered a Space Opera. We might consider something like "War of the Worlds" an epic, yet not a Space Opera. 'Bladerunner' also comes to mind, though I would even venture to say that it is very "cowboy and indians" with the Bladerunners hunting the replicants. Though that would not be as much of a Space Opera.

One criteria that might aid in this distinction could be the setting. Any story which is set on Earth would make me suspicious that it is not a Space Opera. Some examples of modern films that come to mind are 12 Monkeys and Men in Black.

I have to study now, but maybe Senor Darth, as well as his wide readership, can think about his question and come up with some other criteria.

You should have stated that it was "widely Acclaimed by Pointdexters", her is some space opera distinction:

"Some critics distinguish between space opera and planetary romance. Where space opera grows out of both the Western and sea adventure traditions, the planetary romance grows out of the lost world or lost civilisation tradition. Both feature adventures in exotic settings, but space opera emphasizes space travel, while planetary romances focus on alien worlds." - Mr. Weeki Peedya

I saw Serenity on DVD and thought it was very cool. It suprises me that the tv series did not involve alien contact.

Also, Mike, I would love to read your paper on Space Opera. It sounds awesome. If you don't mind, I think you should forward Darth Spencer a copy of your paper that he can post it as a blog entry.

Spencer Davis said...

Mr. Rumble, thank your for that distinction of space opera vs. planetary romances.

Also, Ian, the movie Serenity does not focus on alien life either. If you recall there is a group of scary, flesh eating, human raping humans called Ravers, but they are in fact human and not alien.

Otis, you will learn much more from reading my blog then you will going to school.
